What is O&M?
Discussed in our March 2025 blog, Best Management Practices — or BMPs— are designed to contain and manage rainfall to protect property and downstream areas from flooding. Designing
and building a stormwater management system alone is not enough to protect from large storms events. Continued maintenance is needed for effective and reliable stormwater control.
While maintenance throughout the year is important, the fall season is crucial due to the increase in fallen leaves and branches which can negatively impact the effectiveness of many stormwater
management systems. Debris can block inlets and outlets causing water to be obstructed from traveling through the system sufficiently.
Debris, both natural and man-made, can create perfect environments for insects and vermin, leading to a range of health and safety problems. Swales and detention basins are susceptible to
accumulation of objects that cause unwanted ponding— keeping these areas clear is crucial to the deterrent of unwanted pests.
Make it a priority to look through your Operation and Maintenance Manual and inspect your stormwater management facilities. Reach out to WJH Engineering for more information on the
care of your stormwater systems.
